November 2016 - As a Trimble eCognition software trainer, I come face to face with our users on a regular basis. Many have successfully integrated eCognition into their day-to-day production environments and others are looking into how they can expand the horizons of what they can do with the software to get even more out of their investment.
A fascinating article was recently published in the May, 2016 edition of the Trimble technology & moremagazine entitled "One Forest, Multiple Perspectives". This article provides a wonderful example of how eCognition has been implemented for forest mapping in Scandinavia by our customer COWI, a Danish international consulting group.
COWI has developed an automated forest classification and mapping solution to utilize both LiDAR and other datasets. According to COWI's Erik Heimsdal Iversen, "it turned out that the combination is particularly well suited for rapidly classifying vegetation and delineating forest stands. And it's 10 times faster than photogrammetry." This solution has enabled COWI to reduce the "traditional forest mapping effort" significantly from several months to only a few days."
After some initial refinements to their solution, Iversen's small team has now processed 5 million ha (12.3 million ac) of forest throughout Sweden and Finland and have even expanded their services to markets in South America.
